I was planning to get a driving license in Nebraska before heading to Tennessee for graduate school. Can Nebraska`s driving license be recognized in Tennessee?

It is state law that you get a new drivers license and register your vehicle within 30 days of arrival in Tennessee. tonalc2

It depends on whether you move to Tennessee, or just attend school there. If you are actually moving, then yes, you’ll need to get a new driver’s license within a month or so. As far as I know, every state in the US requires this.

However, if you’re in the military, or a dependent of the military, or attending an out of state school, and you keep your permanent address in your old state (Nebraska, in your case), then your license will be valid in Tennessee. However, you MUST familiarize yourself with Tennessee traffic laws! Ignorance of the law is not a defense!

My husband was in the military for 3 terms, and my old driver’s license was accepted in every state that we moved to.

If you register to vote in a new state, that’s considered changing your legal state of residence. Jessica
