How do you get a license to drive a boat in the UK?

amy asked:

How old do you have to be? Do you need to have taken lessons with an official teacher before applying for a license (like when learning to drive a car)? Is there an actual ‘driving test’ for boats? Does the UK license enable you to go anywhere you like, or can you only travel in UK (or maybe E.U) waters?

Also, do you need a seperate license for a boat you intend to use for fishing with small nets?

Pretty much any info on this topic would be great :D Thank you very much!

  1. Greywolf says:

    1. On the sea – you don’t need a license to drive the boat, but if you don’t get the knowledge, the sea will kill you.
    2. How old – any age, but if you cause trouble/have an collision, a responsible adult will have to take responsibility (if that’s you, fine).
    3. In rivers – varies according to the river – check local bye-laws
    4. Inland waterways/canals – both UK and EU have strict rules; in EU,you MUST have a CEVNI license or you will be stopped.
    5. Fishing with nets possibly counts as fishing commercially – will need licenses and a quota allocation – check local regs.
