Mrs Z asked:

There is a special license for motor cycle drivers, right? Do you need to take a test and get a motor cycle license if you get a scooter? I’m talking about one that goes about 40 mph?
Also, what is the fastest scooter you can get without needing a motor cycle license?
Do you have to take a driver’s test to get a motorcycle license? And I suppose you need special insurance too?

In most states you can drive a scooter without a motorcycle license if it meets certain requirements. These requirements usually state that it needs to be 50cc or less and have a top speed of no more than 30MPH. However, you can usually get away with one that can do near 40 as long as it is a 50cc. Check with the dealer that you purchase it from on whether it qualifies as a moped or needs to be licensed as a motorcycle. Jake

Check you local DMV people are getting fed up with those little scooters and some laws have been passed to get them off the street. and to keep people who lost their licenses off the street on them. dirtytricksracing@sbcglobal.net

there are 2 types of licenses.
Class L: for scooters/bikes under 150cc)….these bikes can not go on the hwy.
Class M: for bikes/scooters over 150cc. Class M can ride lower than 150cc also.
i think 250cc is the minimum amount of cc’s for the highway, so depending of what your use needs are. You might as well take a MSF course and get ur class M. balibot
